ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis)

What is ABA?

ABA is an approach founded on the science of learning and behavior. It directly studies the environment and understands how behaviors are influenced by the factors in the environment. Once factors controlling the behavior are identified, we change those factors to increase the appropriate behavior and decrease inappropriate behaviors. Ongoing data collection is essential in understanding progress and demonstrating that the treatment plan is the function of behavior change.

Over the past 40 years, a substantial volume of literature has demonstrated the successful use of ABA-based procedures to reduce challenging behaviors and increase appropriate behaviors.

When is ABA used?

ABA therapy is used to improve behaviors like social skills, reading, academics, and communication as well as learned skills like grooming, hygiene, fine motor dexterity, job proficiency and even simple things like a child keeping his room clean.

ABA has become widely accepted among healthcare professionals and used in many schools and outpatient and inpatient treatment clinics. Although ABA is often used in reference to autism spectrum disorder, as it is one of the only scientifically valid therapies available, ABA is used in many other contexts including education, health and fitness, healthcare, and business management.

ABA has been endorsed by various state and federal entities including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Institute of Child Health & Human Development, the National Academies of Science, and the Surgeon General as the best practice for individuals with autism.
